In Humphrey's explanation of why he can't agree with government policy, lies an important difference between how governments used to function and hos they function now - at least in the British Commonwealth. Robert Menzies, who was a Liberal Party (a conservative party) prime minister of Australia in the 1950;s, wrote a book about his career, which is a textbook on how to be a government minister. In it he explained that the permanent public servant is the minister's expert advisor, whose advice can be trusted and should be followed. There's an obvious benefit in that - a career public servant will always be more technically knowledgeable than any elected minister, and will have been around long enough to know what works and what doesn't. And an obvious disadvantage - it will lead to strong conservatism - nothing will ever change. When Gough Whitlam, who was a Labor Party (radical/reformist party) prime minister in the 1970's, he took that attitude that advice from permanent public servants should be ignored, as they are committed to status quo. Instead, Whitlam and his successors hired their own advisors, generally people who were smart, communicated well, but had no experience. The result was a PM who meant well but created one stuff-up after another. About the only things Whitlam did well was a) ending conscription, and b) making porn freely available. Later, Paul Keating became prime minister. He listened to permanent public servants, but asked hard questions and challenged them, forcing them to think and give good advice. Then he made his own mind up. That's how it should be done. But Whitlam types have prevailed and the public service is now politicised. A pox on Menzies types. A pox also on Whitlam types.

The whole sketch is full of whit and absolute Gold, I just love it best when at 2:40, Humphrey declares, “It not MY Job to Care(!), that’s what Politicians are for.” The tone of emotion, saying he gets it humanistically, but stands aside for the good functioning of government.

We need an American version of this.

What's My Line, and Yes Minister/ Yes Prime Minister two of the greatest and most intelligent shows on television. In the whole history of the medium there has never been two shows that were indeed the most intelligent. Watch both shows and; John Charles Daily, and Nigel Hawthorne are the two Masters of Circumlocution.

This program should be mandatory viewing in schools. It is as timely today as it ever was.

Unfortunately, not true. Most advanced countries have a policy that prevents extremist propaganda from being pushed through news media. The U.S. no longer has a Fairness Doctrine, so half of our country listen to and watch FAR right-wing extremism on "news' channels like Fox "News." Such individuals are susceptible to extremism and are usually very LOUD about the BS they believe is true.

Who is to say what a "terrorist" is? In the U.S. the number one driver of healthcare costs (which increase at three times the rate of wages) is pharmaceutical prices. Every other country controls those costs in one way or another. As a result of the U.S. not regulating prices, 50,000 men, women, and children DIE every year in the U.S. due to lack of access to preventive healthcare and price-gouged medications. That is more deaths than ANY terrorist organization murders in a year. Again, who is to say what a "terrorist" is?

There's a logical contradiction in the script. First he says that they should not do anything about the arms, pursuing Hacker to stop thinking about it and later he says "it's not my job, it's the politicians' job to worry about it".

Gwen Taylor, who plays Agnes in this clip, was also the one who played Mrs. Big Nose in Monty Python's Life Of Brian. It was she who, after the crowd had established that Christ had just uttered the words "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" said "Oh I'm glad they're getting something".

"The only real way to reform the civil servant system is to reform the political system. And no government's going to reform the system that put them into power." - couldn't have put it better as to why voting will never work if you fundamentally disagree the farce that modern politics has become.

At least Europeans had laws, courts and rules back in 13-14th centuries. Even that time. In Islamic world the execution would be quick without trial. Or under Turco-Mongol rule. Without any bloody records.

That’s what wrong with religion these animals think they do whatever the fuck they want and all they got to do is ask for forgiveness or confess and all is forgiven yet not forgotten by their victims the innocent who had been indoctrinated to believe god and priest and pastor and all religious leaders have the right to do what they want cause they speak for god if these animals speak to god then god is a monster and have no business being obeyed
